  • Geographic Distribution: North America, Africa, Europe, East Asia, Australia, South America



  • Photosynthetic Apparatus: C3


  • Major Identifying Characteristic: Forms basal rosette. Broad, egg-shaped leaves on long petioles. Strongly ribbed leaves with 5-7 longitudinal veins. Flowers form on long, slender stalk.


Control Strategies

  • Cultural Control: Broadleaf plantain can be removed mechanically, but care must be taken to be sure that all of the root system is removed. Maintain a healthy stand of turfgrass by properly fertilizing and controlling insects and diseases. Keep soil pH between 6.5 and 7.0.


  • Chemical Control: Selective postemergence herbicides may be used in spring or fall during periods of active growth
